What does Calvary Chapel mean?
Calvary comes from the Latin word "calvarius" and means the same as Golgotha, the place where Jesus was crucified. Chapel comes from "capella", which means "meeting room".
The first Calvary Chapel originated in Costa Mesa, California, USA. Pastor Chuck Smith oversaw this church fellowship from 1965 to Oct. 3, 2013 when he went home to be with his Lord. Pastor Brian Broderson continues to lead the church in his stead. Among the attendees at Calvary worship services were hippies, street people and social dropouts, in whom the traditional churches weren't interested. Because of this he become known as the "Father of the Jesus People Movement". Today approximately 35,000 people visit worship services and Bible studies at Calvary Costa Mesa, California each week. So far approx. 1500 daughter churches have sprung up worldwide from this one original church.
What we are all about
- Our goal is to introduce people to Jesus Christ—To come to know Him better and more intimately—And to become more like Him in our Christian lives.
- We seek to come to love God, the Father, the Son, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit with all our heart, and with all the mind. Expositional Bible teaching, worship, prayer and fellowship are the main pillars of our meetings. When you visit our services you will observe a distinctly modern and casual style.
- Calvary Chapel is a missionary fellowship. Our proclamation in word and song (worship services, Bible studies and concerts) always follow two goals: to strengthen people who already know Jesus in their faith, as well as to reach out to those who don't yet have a relationship with Him.
- Theologically, we can be classified neither as fundamentalists nor as liberals - we believe in a correct and scientific interpretation of God's Word, the Bible. Calvary Chapel Darmstadt is a Christian community that is committed to the theological basis of the German Evangelical Alliance.
